The Great Father MC Showdown!!

My God! My last post about Father MC was all the way back in 2009? I'm shocked I haven't posted about him yet in 2011, let alone the fact that I somehow missed all of 2010! Of course, I shall take immediate action to rectify this situation, but of sadly... I can't get 2010 back. All I can do is act in the moment.

So, if you want to talk about albums that flew under the radar by rappers who've had big, hit records, you'd have a hard time getting more obscure than Father MC's fourth album from 1995, after he was dropped from Uptown. I mean, he had huge, chart-topping hits, and then I feel like I might be the only person who knew he came back in 1995. It probably didn't help any that he actually came out with two full-length albums that year, on two different labels, with largely the same track-listing...

Yeah, there's Sexual Playground on Topp Dogg/ Spoiled Brat Recordings, and then there's This Is for the Players on Moja Entertainment. Both credit Father MC as executive producer, too, which lends credence to them both being legit. Both have a lot of songs in common, but both also have a few exclusive songs. A few songs are interludes, a few songs are the same but with slightly altered titles, it's all confusing and misleading... And that means it's up to me, and me alone, to break 'em both down and set it all straight for the hip-hop world.

First let's look at the...

Songs in common:

Do Me (SP)/ You Can Do Me Right (TIftP) - Father plays it safe here, rhyming over a classic, old school bassline (from Tragedy's "Live Motivator," MC Beta's "There's Nothing Like New York," etc) and adding a nice R&B hook.

Sexual Playground - Not bad either. Some nice R&B choruses, and the production just sounds like a slightly lower budget version of the stuff on his previous albums.

This Is 4 the Players - Kind of a slowed down, g-funk thing. Corny, and the hook is sub-par.

You Can Do Me Right Tonight (SP)/ I Want Your Lovin' (TIftP) - You probably thought "You Can Do Me Right" and "You Can Do Me Right Tonight" were the same song, huh? But no, "You Can Do Me Right" is actually "Do Me" and this is actually a.k.a. "I Want Your Lovin'." It's almost like they were intentionally trying to be confusing. Anyway. lyrics-wise, and hook-wise what with the girl-sung chorus, it's typical Father MC, but it's got a hardcore X-Clan style percussion track, and some keys smoothing the gap between the two styles. Pretty interesting.

Am I What You Want (SP)/ I Am What You Want (TIftP) - I like how the different title changes the question into a statement, totally reversing the sentiment. Anyway, it's a fun retake on Teddy Pendergrass's "Close the Door," even though a lot of rappers beat him to the punch with this sample (a la Big Daddy Kane in '94 with his single, "In the PJ's"). But it works because Father retains more of the natural R&B elements.

Treat Me Right - This is an upbeat one, some familiar samples, R&B hook, new jacky Father MC exactly like you'd expect.

Okay, but now let's get to the interesting info, the exclusives. First the...

Sexual Playground exclusives:

Let's Get Into FMC - Like the title suggests, this is just an intro. It's about ten to fifteen seconds of pretty random sound-clips.

Playground - This is a garbage remix of "Sexual Playground" that puts the whole thing to an awful club beat and adds some additional, shitty club samples. Interestingly, there was a single for "Sexual Playground" and this wasn't included.

4 the Players - This is just the instrumental of "This Is 4 the Players."

That's All - A silly outro gag.

This Is for the Players exclusives:

High Rollers - This was a single, which is surprising, because it's one of the worst songs on either album. The hook and concept are corny, and the beat's so smoothed out it's flat-out boring.

Sexual Healing - This is a shockingly abrasive interlude by raggamuffin MC Culture who kicks a fun, dirty acapella.

Funking With Father - Father comes a little harder on this one, but then the beat is in more of a smoothed out, G-funky mode with a little muzak twist on "Five Minutes of Funk" thrown in, all of which kind of counteracts his delivery. He closes by announcing that "the name of the crew is called Sex!" Basically, it's just not good.

Hey... How Ya Doin' - This was another single. It's interesting that two of the singles are exclusive to one version of the album. It's not bad, and certainly better than "High Rollers" or "Funking With Father," but I don't know who picked the singles - the album tracks are almost all much better and catchier.

the Interludes - There's several pretty useless skits on this album. On one, he's standing on the city streets talking to his buddies, another is just a random sound effect between songs. The last one features his daughter as they sweetly say goodbye to each other. The cassette has a bonus, uncredited intro, though it IS listed on the CD and LP (the CD and LP also give the Interludes helpful subtitles like "Studio Talk"). This one's pretty long and heavily produced; the premise of which is that Father MC is doing a radio interview with a sexy, flirty host asking him about the album. It's full of amazingly wonderful dialogue like, "what do you mean when you talk about a 'Sexual Playground?' Is that like a bunch of rides?" She even asks him if that's a microphone in his pocket or if he's just happy to be there.

Life - I guess this must be a "bonus" song, since it comes after the Farewell Interlude. This is definitely something out of Father MC's usual scope... it sounds like he's been inspired by artists like Big Mike, where he raps slow and smooth about being broke and struggling. The hook changes between each verse, which is cool, with lyrics like, "I feel the world's about to end because I see the devil's grin and my dead friends are laying on the ground." The beat sounds very Rap-A-Lot, too, and it ends with Father ranting a message to the government, followed by a scary voice which I think is supposed to be the devil himself, but who comes off more like Bushwick Bill or something. Definitely an unexpected conclusion to the album.

...So what have we learned? Well, we learned that, of the two, This Is 4 the Players is easily the definitive album. It has basically everything from Sexual Playground, plus a bunch more, including two of the singles (although the singles really aren't the best tracks at all). Sexual Playground only had some extra filler. But, the upshot is that all the best songs are on both versions, so you haven't really gone wrong no matter which version you have. If you have either, which you probably don't. :P

P.s. - Did you know, Father MC just dropped a new album, Fambody, on Itunes last August?

  2. Huh? I don't get where you're getting the idea that I don't know about those albums... I own both No Secrets and My, and I link to the Fambody album in this post. You should check out my Father MC discography page (also linked in this post), where I list the track-listings for all his singles, albums and guest appearances.

  3. I AGREE WITH THE WRITTER I was in the studio enginering for him on some of they showcase artist. Father MC had me believing he already pre-Sold records on his New Album and instead found out he made no money. He was drunk every day, talking loud calling women Bi... words. He borrow money for his habbits from me and had me buying him lunch. He work in studio city with James a Killer Rabbit they barely paid me. Father MC I see now lies alot in live in his past. The do online submission to artist to come in and get a Universal contract. Well find out later he didnt even have one he also again with a small label in New York who do online listing. Many people complain about his work. HE stay drunk almost every day dating women for studio time money and also had a girl friend I think. I dont think he really want to be a artist I think he want the Fame back but cant because he is broke so he drinks every day due to that. His 2010 album was ok I dont really listen to rap but t it was cool. There was no marketing .

    2. My name is Mia, and I was the Artist in the Studio that , Mike the engineer is refering to...To set the Record straight, I felt Mike was overpaid, made so many mistakes, I was hoping James would hire someone else, but gave Mike many chances...So I , as the Artist was very happy with my experiences with Fam, and did not see him take a drink, and did not call me BI, but treated me with respect...So Mike, get a life, and better yet go back to Recording School, and stop blaming everyone but yourself for your great shortcomings..

    1. Hi Jessica, Sorry for the late response..but No, this is Not a Scam, far from it...There is not a Promise of a Deal with Universal, but an opportunity...You will love working with Fam, and he will follow thru, and try and get a Deal for you..The Problem many Artists have, is they want it so bad, that they forget no one can Promise you a Deal, but Fam makes sure the Songs and the Artist are Strong with great performances...

  7. I also was in that studio in 2010 move here to Los Angeles and seen the NBC Universal lie add this was a scam the plays on artist hoping for a deal. I think Father MC is the bigest lier and the world. He dont have a job this is how he lives. James use him to get the people in and them they scam. Father Mc is broke drunk and always borrow money. He tried to sleep with me while living with his sweet girl friend why she stay with him I have no clue. He was sleeping with another Black girl that was suppose to be his partner but I think that was a front until she became 6months with child with Twins. That was the worst time of my life dealing with Fam Body he is such a good lier. He told me he found Keisha Cole and later that was a lie. He told us he had a G 6 PLANE. Later I found out that was a lie he was broke rapper with a scam. Father MC borrow money and Borrow Artist cars. He stayed Drunk call women bitches. We all thought he had a deal with Universal you can go on Universal website an cant find him!

  8. Father MC is not scamming anybody, I was skeptical myself until I watched him work in the studio, he is actually a hot producer and great songwriter. What I think people are forgetting is that you are paying for studio time at James Killer Rabbit Studios, what about producer fees, engineering fees, songwriter fees. You are not getting a bad deal at all, its called investing in your self, and also I never seen father MC drunk since I've been working with him. He has great work ethics in the studio when it comes time to put in work that's what he does -BANDIT

  9. This is crazy mess.... Someone told me about this post my Name is Maggie and yes he knows me .....Father MC is a liar and a scamer and he tellb everyone that producer fee mess. James and Fam split the money go check Universal and see if he is any where as a producer.... Its a lie he havent Sold a records since the 9Os. yes he drinks everyday and he write the same song for different artist.
I THINK THE SCAM IS DONT SAY YOU CAN GIVE ARTIST A DEAL AND YOU DONT HAVE ONE TO GIVE.................. I LEARN DO YOUR RESEARCH EVERYONE CANT BE SING THE SAME SONG...... WHERE IS ANY HISTORY IN 2011 HE DID ANY THING HAVE YOU HEARD ANY OF HIS MUSIC ON RADIO. WHY HE NOT LIST AS A PRODUCER ON UNIVERSAL. ONLINE DEAL HE HAS ANYONE CAN DO THAT WHY ARE YOU PAYING HIM. CAN HE LET YOU MEET ANY OF HIS ARTIST HE PUT OUT IN PERSON. No he scam the all......... I heard even the little 12year old girl he parnet know he scams........ studio time average 50 to 75hr why would you pay those loser.............I give you a few more payments

  10. So where is this site that says Father is on Universal and asks people to sign up, etc?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Craig List it says NBC Universal Deal Famous Producer looking for talent. Its like a talent show to see what artist has money. Even if you can't sing but you have the 1500 ~day studio time. Then Father MC prolong the song so you dont finish you have to come back and spend another 1500.00. to you spend 25,000 to 30,000 for an album. He tell you that the label needs 2 hot song for a deal then he goes from there knowing everyone want a deal. But he only have a online website call famousrecordscorp.com that your music sits there and hope people find you with no marketing. sad he don't work and I heard he owe so much childsupport he can't use his name. So this is the way he get money upfront cash. It not the studio time we all are upset with it the lie he get people to come in on a Universal deal and not true. There million of free online site artist can put there music on why lie and take there money. I learn alot from Father MC about scam I came out here for my singer career and got scam.

    2. My name is Ricky D, and I was recording at Killer Rabbit Studios with Tim/Fam the same time the Artist that wrote this misleading opinion above...I did record an EP with the noteworthy Producer, and I did end up getting a label deal with Universal Records...To shed a little light on this unhappy Artist...When I was at Killer Rabbit waiting to Record in the evening after this Artist , what I saw was an Artist unable to follow the easiest of melody lines, and was constantly telling Fam that he was singing in tune and in meter, but it was so obvious he was not...and because he got frustated, it took more time to record, and thus is the reason this Artist blames everyone but himself that it cost more to record....Fam is a Professional, and this Artist did not, in my opinion, have a clue...

  22. Wow, a lot of fake replies here. Just for the record, one person spent a lot of time posting a bunch of reply comments here all in the same evening, pretending to be different people and attacking anyone who criticized Killer Rabbit Studios. These were all posted by the same person, despite the claims in the actual comments to be different people. The most laughable was the one by someone calling himself Dr. Herb Ross, publicly posting his patient's private medical info (pro-tip: the famous mental hospital you're thinking of is named Bellvue, not Bellview).

This is pretty pathetic in a couple of ways, and somebody should be, if not ashamed of their actions, at least deeply embarrassed by them. But I'm not going to delete the comments, so people involved in the discussion can see the levels that were stooped to.

  26. LOL!!!! Wowwwww! Yeah I used to live on the same block as "Fam" back in 06 and 07...I stayed at the Encore apartments on Van Nuys Blvd. in Sherman Oaks and "Fam" was staying in a condo right down the block on the street that intersected Van Nuys (street name escapes me now). Judging from the comments, that place might not have even been his. Daaaaaamn homie! *50 voice*

He ran his scam on my ex gf when we were both new to the area from northern Cali (3-way "conference call" with "industry execs" and all). Yeah, he might have gotten over on a couple of young, naive 20-something year olds (I think she may have paid him a grand or 2), but apparently that's the only way he can get money due to his back child support. Sad. :(

And it looks like Fam himself is replying to all the people here, attempting to masquerade as different people. Even MORE sad and pathetic...

Slimey, greasy, grimey dude...Yeah he was a drunk...When he invited my ex and I over to his place, he bragged about how much he could drink, and he tried to get ME drunk. And seeing as though it was reported that he and Diddy had a gay relationship in the past, I don't know if he was trying to get me drunk just for fun, to distract me so he could continue his scamming ways, or because he wanted ME instead of her. *gag*

Yeah we knew him when he was just "Fam" and not the ridiculous re-incarnation of "Fambody". It appears he's just as greasy with either name though.

    What a sad, sad life...

  32. I just read this article and decided that i would set the record straight about the 1995 album, Sexual Playground. My spouse and his crew produced and financed this album so I have first hand knowledge of the true reason why there are two albums. During the recording of this album, the reels were stolen by Brian Chase after he was kicked off the project for failure to come through with the financial backing he promised. He came back to Montreal and stole the reels and released the album illegally under Topp Dogg. The album wasn't even finished yet which is why they aren't identical. It was later released under Moja but that was a joke as well. Father MC brokered a deal that got him paid and the producers and financiers of the album a BIG FAT BOGUS check that bounced. We never saw or heard from him again. And for the record, it wasn't actually HIS daughter talking on the album he just pretended it was cause he's a fraud. He was always Bullshitting and lying. He had numerous girls buying him jewelery, clothes and cars and telling everyone he was a high roller when the fact was he had nothing. I spent months watching him take advantage of women and using people to get what he wanted. Now that I think back on it, he probably was in on the theft with Brian so he could get paid on both albums!

I HAVE KNOWN TIMOTHY SINCE WE WERE 10YRS OLD AND I KNOW BOTH HIS DANCERS FOR 1 OF THEM WERE MY COUSIN , BACK TO THIS WHOLE SCAM THAT IS CRAZY TO ME BECAUSE TIM COME FROM MONEY BEFORE FATHER MC WAS THOUGHT ABOUT ,HIS PARENTS WELL OFF AND RAISED HIM And his brother with morals, work ethics and integrity , He did go through some child support issues with his 1st child's mother but i know for a fact that has been resolved and him and his daughter have a good relationship Today , As far as scamming for money i can't see that and praying that isn't the case ,Now don't get me wrong if it is any truth to it shame on him , I also see the only site that's reporting all these negative allegations happens to be the only site putting out these reports, What also makes one wonder is because he isn't hard to find it's not like he disappeared ,And FYI he was never Ran out of NY as one of the comments implied for he is welcomed home with open arms anytime he's there .. so i am not sure where some of the ill say in this whole thread comes from ..
